Guidelines for the Play Writing Competition

This play writing competition is, unapologetically, Lagos-centric. To compete, you must boldly buy into the spirit and essence of Lagos; past, present and future. The competition seeks to unearth fresh body of literary works that celebrate the vibrancy of Lagos. Clearly, this new body of works will enrich Nigerian literary vault aside the attendant economic and social imperatives concomitant to it.

Prizes:

Winning playwright will receive 5 million naira and a publishing contract.

1st runner up will get 2.5 million naira.

2nd runner up will receive 1 million naira.

All three plays will be performed by the Akete Theatre Festival where prizes will be handed out to winners.

Eligibility:

  1. It is open to all playwrights provided entry meets set criteria.
  2. No playwright may enter more than one play.
  3. All competition entry plays must be original work of the playwright and must be directly entered into the competition by the playwright.
  4. Only unpublished plays qualify for entry into Akete Play Writing Competition.
  5. Content:

All entries for the competition must explore Lagos themes and culture(s).

Submission format:

  1. Cover page should provide play title, playwright’s name and a short synopsis of the play.
  2. Last page should provide information about the playwright.
  3. Each entry must be submitted as a (i) Word Document and (ii) PDF Document. Both documents must be attached to the same email.
  4. Email Subject should read 2017 PLAY SUBMISSION, PLAY TITLE BY PLAYWRIGHT’S NAME. Example: 2017 PLAY SUBMISSION, RAGING RIOT by RAFIU ROBERTSON

Closing date:

All entries must be received at the Akete Festival Office (through email) not later than August 31st 2017 by 5p.m. (Local time).

Result:

Winning plays will be announced in October.

Decision:

The decision of the Akete Playwriting Competition Assessors (APCA) is final.

Manuscripts:

All playwrights are advised to keep their original manuscripts as Akete will not be returning any play script entered for the competition irrespective of whether the play script wins or loses.

Can the script be for stage plays alone, or those of Radio, Television or Films are acceptable?

Thank you so much #AkéteFestival for this unique opportunity, plus the website and graphic designs are super awesome.

I know the script should be in MS Word and PDF but I want to ask if there is any specification as regards length of the play in terms of number of pages and so on. And you said submission is by email, you mean the form above, right?

Thank you for your commendation. The length of the script should be able to accommodate maximum of 2 hours stage play and yes, you should submit your play through the form above.

    Help me akete.
I just submitted on this same page, a doc and PDF format through this very submission page. And I followed the guidelines though it wrote successful but I did not get any acknowledgement from you guys on my mail to show that to you’ve seen it.

I then tweeted you guys on twitter and you said you didn’t get any mail.

    This is my question.
Is there a different mail where we are to submit or we should use the submission page on the website.?
